This painting appeared at the house one day late in the 1980s, and with good humor was always referred to as “The Ugly Man.”

It was only in recent months that we discovered it was actually a painting of Conan the Barbarian that Boris Vallejo had made for the cover of Marvel’s series “Savage Sword of Conan” in 1976.  This painting was the cover of issue #15, and only Stan knew it!

The dark and menacing figure emerging from the shadows and framed against a pulsing red and orange orb dominates the smaller, but powerful, bodies of Conan and a hapless female in peril.

This is not a painting to hang at the end of a long, dark hallway!
