Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
(Walt Disney Studio, 1937)
Full color production cels
5″ x 8″ mat opening
These cels are over 75 years old! Disney’s first feature film predates the more modern plural of “dwarf” as popularized by J.R.R. Tolkien, which you can read about at Grammarist if you are interested. The setup has a great Courvoisier background, but the diamond sparkles are painted on a cel itself, which means for each frame the artist had to adjust them by tiny increments to make them twinkle during animation. It sounds incredibly tedious, but the result was spectacular.
